John Staples is rake who is bored with his existence -- but not bored enough to do anything about his situation. He's drawn to Emma Costello, the servant of his American cousins, but immediately rejects her because she's Irish. When circumstances lead to Emma being put up as stakes in a card game, John saves her -- now owning a woman he can't stand. She then turns around and forces him to allow her to "reform" him so that he can marry another woman.
