Horatio Cave (pronounced Cah-vay), returns from the Napoleonic Wars to claim the title of Lord Darien. The family name of Cave is tainted, however, by a rapist father, murderous brother, all manner of disgraceful ancestors. Darien realizes that neither he, nor his younger brother, will ever be accepted in polite society. His plan is to make himself useful to Lord Dare Debenham, and his family. In addition he decides to coerce Dare's sister, Thea, to pose as his fiance. He hopes that an alliance with this family will be his entree. Thea is determined that Darien will not endanger her family, but finds that she is attracted to the Vile Viscount.

Horatio Cave (pronounced Cah-vay), returns from the Napoleonic Wars to claim the title of Lord Darien. The family name of Cave is tainted, however, by a rapist father, murderous brother, all manner of disgraceful ancestors. Darien realizes that neither he, nor his younger brother, will ever be accepted in polite society. His plan is to make himself useful to Lord Dare Debenham, and his family. In addition he decides to coerce Dare's sister, Thea, to pose as his fiance. He hopes that an alliance with this family will be his entree. Thea is determined that Darien will not endanger her family, but finds that she is attracted to the Vile Viscount.
