Elizabeth Lowell is a pseudonym for Ann Maxwell, who began her career in 1975 writing science fiction under her own name. When she later collaborated on mysteries with her husband, Evan Maxwell, they used the psuedonym A. E. Maxwell. The name Elizabeth Lowell (Ann's middle name plus Evan’s middle name) is the name used on most of the romance fiction that Ann writes by herself. Confused yet? The name Ann Maxwell was used again on the romantic suspense books written in collaboration with Evan.

Individually and with co-author/husband Evan, Ann Maxwell has written over 60 novels and two non-fiction books. There are 30 million copies of these books in print, as well as reprints in 30 foreign languages. The novels range from science fiction to historical fiction, from romance to mystery to suspense.

Under the name Elizabeth Lowell, she has received the numerous professional awards in the romance field, including a Lifetime Achievement award from the Romance Writers of America in 1994. She currently resides in the Pacific Northwest.
