Louisa Hesketh, a widow recently returned to England from India, with the intention of living in the property she's been left in her aunt's will, meets the reclusive and taciturn Geoffrey Redvers. Unfortunately (or fortunately), Roseberry Hall is in a very delapidated condition, so Geoffrey offers Louisa shelter. Travelling up to London for the day, Louisa meets some friends, and comes across Geoffrey, who for some reason behaves very differently and has a reputation as a ladies' man. Louisa is intrigued, and wants to discover the truth about who Geoffrey really is.
