As Alexander Henry Grantham, Viscount Sheridan (aka Sherry) is leaving the theater in Covent Gardens where he has been planning how to break up with his mistress, he is jostled by the crowd. There seems to be some thieves, some scuffle and shouting, but Sherry, distracted, proceeds home. The next day three young boys appear on his doorstep and demand that he save Lily, the thief who had thrown herself into the scuffle and taken a knife that had been meant for him. Upon investigation, Sherry finds that she is indeed close to death. He moves her to his home and together with her three shadows, Pinch, Midge and Dash, he nurses her back to health.
