The Best Romance category was introduced in 1990. This RITA award honors the best romance of the previous year, meaning LaVryle Spencer's 1990 win was for the Best Romance in 1989 and so on. In 1998, a brief experiment in renaming the Best Book, Best Romance category was implemented before being abandoned in favor of the even more short-lived RWA's Favorite Book.
