Elena Baxter, who can perform miraculous healings, and Artur Loginovm, a private eye who picks up on people's memories via touch, end up in the same insane asylum with other patients who exhibit paranormal traits. The hospital isn't what it seems -- the powers of the patients are being exploited. With the assistance of shape shifters, Elena and Artur escape and solve the mystery of their incarceration.
Liu's writing is smart, funny, and mature. The book contains thriller elements. Liu is adept at world-building, creating an alterate universe for her characters to inhabit. The Dirk & Steele Agency, a paranormal detective agency that employs Artur, has drawn comparisons to The X-Men.
