She has served as president of the River City Romance Writers and teaches fiction writing at the University of Memphis with fellow author Debra Dixon. In 2000, Shields joined BelleBooks as partner. She works with Deborah Smith on marketing.

As an author for Silhouette Romance, Martha Shields published eight novels.
