Book Description
Frederick Sullivan has a large gambling debt, so he agrees to marry plain, disabled Clara Danford. After living a sheltered life, all Clara wants is love and happiness, but Freddie's return to gambling and womanizing breaks her heart. Clara sees Freddie as he really is, so even though he's lying and cheating, she prefers the light he brings to her life to the alternative. Unlike many romances where the hero is a rake who isn't really very rakish, Freddie's behavior is bad and he must atone for his many mistakes, making the story one of unusual depth and emotion.
