Lexie Scott, daughter of the FBI director, has been kidnapped by a religious/survivalist cult and taken to their armed compound in North Carolina. As the novel opens, she is climbing over the fence in escape, but is observed by Jack Miller. Jack, is a former cop who has been watching the group in North Carolina because he has gotten a message from his sister who is married to one of the cult leaders. He reluctantly agreed to lead Lexie to safety, but eventually the two have to team up to avoid the cult and to try to save the innocents outside.
