Catherine Coulter is the pen name of Jean Coulter Pogany. Growing up in Texas, she graduated from the University of Texas and received her masters at Boston College. Prior to becoming a full-time writer, she worked on Wall Street as a speechwriter for a company president. She lives in Marin County, California with her physician husband.

She started her career as an author in 1979, writing Regency and historical romances for Signet. Next she wrote category romances for Silhouette and historicals for Onyx, Topaz and Avon. Her foray into the Suspense genre with contemporary romantic thrillers was first published by Onyx. She rewrote most of her earlier titles prior to their reissue.

Starting her long-running historical series about the Sherbrooke family in 1992 at Jove with The Sherbrooke Bride, she launched her Suspense series featuring FBI agents in 1996 with The Cove at that publisher as well.
