This book is a collaborative novel. Each of the three Fortune sisters have magical talent which they have been trying to hide in order to keep a low profile in their small town: Dee is a shapeshifter bank teller, Lizzie is currently unemployed and experimenting with transforming objects, and Mare works in a video store although she can move objects. Twelve years earlier, their Aunt Xantippe had killed their parents, and they have been hiding out from her ever since. Because they did not grow up with magical parents or teachers, they do not have very good control over their abilities. Now, Xan’s powers are waning, so she plots to get her nieces' powers by sending them their soul mates, then negotiating with the girls to give up their powers in exchange for their loves. When Xan's choices show up in town, things do not go as smoothly as Xan had hoped, although, eventually the sisters do find their true loves.
