In today's market, category romance is synonymous with titles published by Harlequin. However, category romance is often used to describe a shorter story where the building romance between the hero and heroine dominates the story.

These books are usually shorter in length and often concentrate on the romance without any secondary plot or story. Different category imprints have focused on different types of romance, for example, Harlequin Intrigue is that publisher's romantic suspense line. The category publishers also usually issued several books per month, and a purchaser could sign up to receive the books each month as a subscription.
