The Victorian era is generally agreed to stretch through the reign of Queen Victoria (1837-1901). This is obviously a long period of time when there were many societal changes. The era reflects varying artistic styles, literary schools, and movements of social, political and religious beliefs. Today we tend to think of the Victorian age as a time of "prudishness" and "repression" which is reflected in many of the historical romances.
