Book Description
There was something about the green, peasceful valley that brooded ill. Just what it was, Verne couldn't guess, as he rode into Horcado and bought a drink with his last coin. In the King Pin Saloon, he met Concho and Rile, tumbleweeds like himself, and a short while later, roaring drunk they left town for the OIC - Obe Carter's big spread. There Verne found the answer to the hostile atmosphere that hung over the rangeland - it was a prelude to the smashing of the OIC by a syndicate of ranchers surrounding Carter's cattle kingdom. Obe Carter was brave but bull-headed; he intended to fight it out if it cost him his own like and that of every man working for him. They didn't have a chance and Verne knew it, but there was a kid named Tommy and a girl named Bess who would suffer most - so Verne and the two saddle tramps. Concho and Rile, enlisted in Old Obe Cater's lost cause. Joe Peel who headed the ranch-grabbing syndicate, laughed when the three mavericks threw in their guns with the OIC bunch - and it was the last good laugh he ever had.
