The Romance Writers of America 1984's Golden Medallion awards saw the introduction of newer, more refined categories, including breaking down the romance genre by length. The year also saw a first in the awards' short history -- the first co-winners in a category. The Traditional category was introduced in 1984, replacing, presumably, the "Sweet" category from the previous year.
