Merrick MacLachlan, brother of Alasdair from One Little Sin, is an ambitious architect who leads a rather solitary life, keeping his emotions tightly controlled after being betrayed by the woman he loved and married briefly some twelve years earlier. When Madeleine, Lady Besset, newly widowed, moves to London with her son, she buys a house from Merrick, coming face to face with the man she believes betrayed her years earlier. Neither Merrick nor Maddie are happy to discover each other again, but things get worse when Maddie discovers that her father had lied about having their marriage annulled. In fact, the two are still married, making Maddie’s later marriage illegal and her son illegitimate.
