“There's been a terrible accident!” Lee watched in horror as four field workers carried her unconscious husband into the house. Fernando's face was covered with blood, his clothes filthy and torn. One riding boot was mangled beyond recognition. She stared at it uncomprehendingly, until, out of the buzz of voices around her, she heard the explanation: "His foot was caught in the stirrup when his horse bolted. He was dragged across the field before we could stop them.." She stood frozen in the doorway, a single thought coursing through her mind: Maybe he would die. Then, at last, she would be free....
