DARK CHARADE. The sudden, tragic death of her mother brought Nan Stanley home, across nearly two thousand miles of land still ravaged by the Civil War, from Boston to the plantation a hundred miles north of New Orleans. At eighteen, Nan was an orphan, for her father had been killed by a runaway horse nine years earlier. Now all that was left to Nan was the old house -- and her parents' dream, the showboat, The Golden Packet. Her mother had been unable to keep up the boat after the death of her father, but Nan was a girl of great energy, and could think of no more fitting memorial than the restoration of the showboat. Nan's plans existed for her -- plans that called for her to join her parents in death! And soon Nan began to wonder if their deaths had not been planned also!
