Irene Stenson returns to her hometown of Dunsley, California after an absence of many years at the request of her friend, Pamela. She has been gone for 17 years, since the night that she found her parents dead in the kitchen of her home. She hasn't seen Pamela since that night. She checks into the only motel in town which is run by a surly -- and handsome -- ex-marine, Luke. When she can't get Pamela on the phone, she goes to her house to find her dead from an apparent drug overdose. Luke doesn't sleep much and he follows her to the house. He is on hand for several unpleasant episodes and they eventually act on their attraction. Luke is hiding out in Dunsley to recover from his stint in the Marines during the war, and from possible post traumatic stress disorder. The intrigue surrounding Irene's parent's death and Pamela's death, plus his attraction to Irene are just what he needs to get on with his life.
