In the 14th century, Allegreto, an assassin, attempts to regain his birthright by capturing Elena, the princess of Monteverde, and forcing her to become his wife. While Elena is attracted to Allegreto, she's also turned off by his career as an assassin.
Violence, especially during the scene where Allegreto forces Elena to marry him is powerful. Laura Kinsale uses Middle English during dialogue to give the book a period feel.
