Berkley Books was founded in 1955, and in 1965 was bought by G. P. Putnam's Sons to form The Putnam Berkley Group, Inc, which in turn was bought by MCA ten years later. 1979 was a year of major growth for Berkley, when major management came from the publishing houses Bantam and Dell. That same year, The Putnam Berkley Group, Inc bought Jove from Harcourt Brace, which continues as a distinct imprint.
In 1996 both companies was bought by the British publisher Penguin Group. The new owners merged Putnam and Berkley with Penguin Group USA to form Penguin Putnam Inc. and kept Berkley as an imprint.
