Catherine Coulter is the pen name of Jean Coulter Pogany. Grewing up in Texas, she graduated from the University of Texas and received her masters at Boston College. Prior to becoming a full-time writer, she worked on Wall Street as a speechwriter for a company president.

She started her career as an author in 1979, writing Regency romances for the Signet Regency Romance imprint. Next she wrote category romances for Silhouette, historicals for Signet, Onyx, Topaz and Avon. Her foray into the Suspense genre with contemporary romantic thrillers was first published by Onyx. She started her long-running historical series about the The Sherbrooke family in 1992 at Jove, as well as her Suspense series featuring two FBI agents, launched in 1996.
