Captain Kenneth Wilding returns home from the Napoleonic Wars to find that his father has ruined the family estate. In order to pay off the creditors and offer his sister a dowry, Kenneth takes a job infiltrating an artist's home. While he attempts to solve a mystery, Kenneth fights his attraction to the artist's daughter and his own latent desire to paint.
