Book Description

On October 8, 1871 Lucy Hathaway - recently graduated from a prep school - makes a fool of herself by asking the first man who's ever engaged her in a debate on feminist principals to be her lover. Then the Chicago fire hits, and her life is forever changed by a child who is thrown from a window, and presumed orphaned.

Five years later, after raising Maggie as her own, she makes a shocking discovery - the child she saved has a father who's still alive, and it's none other than Randall Higgins, the man she propositioned all those years ago. Randall is as staunch a beleiver in 'a woman's place' as Lucy is in Women's Liberation and Suffragist principals, but together they must raise a daughter who he's never stopped loving, and who calls Lucy "mother".

Trivia

  • The Hostage, The Mistress, and The Firebrand all share the same central set of events during the fire that sets their respective stories in motion. It is heavily suggested that the hero from The Hostage appears to rescue a carriage of trapped horses in the opening sequence of the Firebrand.
  • In one bookshop scene, Lucy handles a book named "the Isle Royale" - a clear reference to The Hostage.
