Mills & Boon began publishing historical romances in the UK under the Masquerade Historical Romance imprint in 1977. In October 1993 the imprint name changed to Legacy of Love. The current Historical Romance imprint name was adopted in July 1996. The name of the series may have changed twice and the cover look far more often than that, but the continuity of numbering remained.

Perhaps the most notable author to get her start from this imprint is Stephanie Laurens.

Many of these stories were also published in the US by Harlequin variously under imprints such as Harlequin Historical (all three iterations of this imprint), Harlequin Regency (all two iterations of this imprint) and as "Special Releases."

In 2001, Mills & Boon launched an out-of-continuity Historical Romance mini-series called The Steepwood Scandal. There are two sets of eight books in this mini-series, which were also to be published in the United States in 2002.
