Mills & Boon began publishing historical romances in the UK under the name Masquerade Historical in 1977. In October 1993 the imprint name changed to Legacy of Love. The name Historical Romance was adopted in July 1996 and from ? on it is called Historical.

The name of the series may have changed twice and the cover look far more often than that, but the continuity of numbering remained.

Perhaps the most notable author to get her start from this imprint is Stephanie Laurens.

Many of these stories were also published in the US by Harlequin variously under imprints such as Harlequin Historical (all three iterations of this imprint), Harlequin Regency (all two iterations of this imprint) and as "Special Releases."
