Mills & Boon began publishing historical romances under the name Masquerade in 1977. In October 1993 the imprint's name changed to Legacy of Love. The name Historical Romance was adopted in July 1996 and from June 2007 on it is called Historical™. The name of the series may have changed twice and the cover look far more often than that, but the continuity of numbering remained.

Many of these stories were also published in North America by Harlequin variously under imprints such as Worldwide Masquerade, Harlequin Historical, Harlequin Historical Subscription, Harlequin Regency Romance and as Special Releases. Perhaps the most notable author to get her start from this imprint is Stephanie Laurens.
