While doing a favor for her cousin, Emma Hathaway is abducted from behind a hat shop in London. She is held for three days, during which she is beaten a transported to the countryside, before she manages to make her escape. Although she doesn’t remember exactly what happened to her, when she is recovered she realizes that she needs protection for herself and for her cousin, Marisol.
Restell Gardner is a gentleman who has a knack for solving other people's problems, and it is to him that Emma turns for help. He is surprised by her bruised and battered face, and immediately jumps to figure out what intrigue lead to her abduction. Meanwhile Emma continues to help her artist uncle with his painting, Marisol continues to plan her wedding to a gentleman with an expertise in appraising art, and Restell provides protection for their every move.
