Excerpt

From Samhain Publishing:

Devon watched Anna take small bites of the food that had been immediately brought to her upon their arrival back to the restaurant. He’d ordered a meal as well, but he’d insisted she go ahead and start hers before it got cold.

“So, Anna, you’re from—?”

“New York,” she supplied, cutting him off.

“Not originally though. Where are you from really?”

She narrowed her eyes at him. “Twenty questions, Devon?”

“We could sit here in silence, and I’ll stare at you while you eat.”

“Tennessee,” she said quickly. “My family is still there. I go back and visit them a couple of times a year.”

“Any brothers or sisters?”

Nodding, she took a sip of wine. “Yes, one brother. My twin, though I’m older by two minutes. He lives in our hometown, is a mechanic and loves cycling on the side. It’s one of his great passions. Big Lance Armstrong fan.”

“You two must be really close.”

“Yeah, we’ve always had that weird twin bond thing you hear about.” She arched a brow. “What about you?”

Devon shrugged. He should have seen that turnabout coming. “There’s not much to tell.”

Anna shook her head, pointing her fork at him. “I told you something about me, a few things to be precise, so now you have to tell me something about yourself.”

His steak was brought to him. He thanked the waiter before returning his gaze to her. “All right, let’s see…I have a sister. She still lives in Oregon, where I’m from.”

She took another bite of her dinner, swallowed, and asked, “Do you keep in touch with your family? What about your parents?”

“My parents are dead. Look, we don’t have to get into my personal life. This week is all about you and whatever you want to do.” He took a bite of his steak, irritated.

Anna sipped her wine, placed her silverware on her plate, and pushed it to the side. She leaned back in her chair, studying him curiously. He tried not to notice how her breasts jutted out, but he couldn’t help imagining the things he could do to those luscious mounds.

Cup them, caress them, swirl his tongue around her nipples till she cried out in pleasure. It was what he was good at. What he was paid for.

She cleared her throat, bringing his attention back to her face, where she’d splayed her hands. “I’m up here,” she stated. Dragging her hands down to encompass her breasts, she emphasized, “Not here.”

He laughed, wiping his mouth. “Forgive me, Anna. They look so inviting, I slipped up.”

Her cheeks stained red and he couldn’t help his knowing grin, even as she cut him a dirty look.

“Fine, since we can do whatever I want to do, after you’re done eating, I want to go to my room and go to bed.” He arched an eyebrow, and she quickly added, “Alone.”

He took a last bite of his potatoes and polished off his steak, before waving the waiter down for the check.

Anna didn’t know what to do. Was she supposed to pay? Was he supposed to pay? She grabbed the bill, but his hand came down over hers. “I have this.”

She lowered her voice. “I don’t know the…” she struggled to find the word, “…etiquette in situations like this.” Good God, there had to be a better word, but that was all she could think of.

He grinned and winked. “Don’t worry, all of this is covered.”

The reality of this meal came crashing in on her. Not that she’d forgotten what he was exactly, but it just seemed so unreal. Her friends had apparently taken care of all the details and that included meals and any extracurricular activities.

Groaning, she grabbed her purse, jumping when he took her hand in his and placed it on his arm. She frowned at him. She didn’t want him to act like a gentleman. She didn’t want to like him. She wanted to be disgusted with him, but for some reason, she found that she really wasn’t.

Something about him was extremely appealing to her. Not to mention the fact that he was drop-dead gorgeous. But there was also a kindness about him, a patience that most men didn’t have. Had he been in the business so long that he’d perfected how to portray exactly what a woman wanted?

They took the elevator up to her floor and he walked her to her room. His low chuckle sent shivers down her spine as she hurriedly dove into her purse for the room key. With the card clutched in her hand, she cleared her throat nervously and looked at him.

“Well, thank you for an…interesting evening, Devon. I’ll be busy all day tomorrow, but maybe we can get together the next day.”

He laughed and leaned in close, his hands coming up on either side of her head, trapping her against the wall.

She swallowed with great difficulty as his face came closer to hers, his breath fanning her cheek. Her mouth went dry, and she had to fight not to lick her lips.

“No, Anna. Janie supplied me with, as she put it, your…” his lips brushed her jaw, “…outlined…” her earlobe, “…detailed…” His tongue swirled and he sucked the lobe between his lips. Her whole body erupted into quivers, need rushing past her reserved barrier. Her eyes closed briefly before he pulled away, gazing down at her. “…five times thought-out and approved schedule for this whole week.” His body moved in closer, brushing against hers. “I know that you have a meeting in the morning, one after lunch, and that you’ll be free for the rest of the day.”

His lips were so close. She stared wide-eyed at him, hoping he would kiss her, yet at the same time knowing that she shouldn’t want him to.

She licked her lips. Damn.

Finally he touched his mouth to hers. She had to fight not to moan as he deepened the kiss, his tongue probing for entrance. She obliged.

His delicious caress scorched her mouth, and she returned every sweep of his tongue with her own. His hands came down to grasp her arms, his body pushing into hers.

Nothing about him was soft. Every inch, every angle was hard, wreaking havoc on her senses. His hands still gripped her bare arms, running up and down until she finally caved in and wound them around his neck. Her hands went into his hair.

His knee moved between her legs, pressing into her, and instant heat pooled in her belly to settle in slick, throbbing need between her legs. He felt so delicious, all man, all male strength as he held her against the wall. She pushed her body against his and moaned.

He released her, slowly pulling away, but not before he placed another lingering kiss to her lips. She stared up at him through a haze, seeing his grin of smug male satisfaction, and as the foggy haze lifted so came the moment of clarity. He’d gotten what he wanted.

Her surrender to his kiss. Damn.

He tugged her close again, hugging her tightly around the waist, placing a kiss on the tip of her nose. “Sweet dreams, Anna. I’ll see you tomorrow, here in your room, at five.”

He left her then and she watched, leaning against the wall, her legs still wobbly, as he walked back up the hall and disappeared around the corner. With trembling hands she unlocked her door, made her way shakily across the room and fell on the bed. Grabbing one of the pillows, she buried her face in it and groaned.
