Biography

Caron Todd was born on a Royal Canadian Air Force base in northern France, and lived with her parents and older brother just over the border in Belgium. She toured Europe with her family, sleeping peacefully in her carry-cot through Germany and Luxembourg, over the Swiss and French Alps and into the Riviera. Not even Monte Carlo disturbed her rest. When she was a year old, her travels ended. Her family returned to Canada, to Winnipeg, Manitoba, where her father resumed his newspaper career.

Early on, she decided she'd like to be an author. She was encouraged by her parents, who kept shelves and tables full of books all over the house. At Sunday breakfast, or over a pot of tea, they entertained their three children with stories about growing up on the prairies and in southern Ontario during the Depression and the Second World War. Sometimes Caron watched her father work at home, impressed that the paper inching out from the typewriter would be in the newspaper the next day with his byline. As soon as she could print, she made "books" of her own. Her first novel was sold to her dad — for a dime rather than the agreed-upon quarter because it was much shorter than planned.

When she was 10, her family moved to a farm an hour from the city. The house had been built in the early 1900s and needed a lot of work — she could hear bees buzzing in the walls beside her bed at night, and squirrels running through the attic. It was a wonderful place to grow up. Best of all, she could have a horse of her own. She spent summer days building forts in the woods, riding with friends, and writing stories shamefully similar to the English adventure and pony books she read by the armload. Later, she contributed stories to a newspaper's children's page, developed and edited by her mother.

After high school, Caron worked as a nurse, started a family, and took some university courses before a holiday in the Alberta Badlands encouraged her to write her first romance novel. Now, she spends her days working happily with plots and characters. She still lives in Manitoba, with her husband and two children, all of whom are a constant resource and support.
