Hodder & Stoughton, founded in 1868, was built on publishing the biggest quality commercial books of each era and promoting them adventurously. The 1920s brought an explosion of commercial fiction at keen prices – Hodder's Yellow jackets series were the pre-cursors to the first paperbacks, and included bestsellers from Edgar Wallace.

In 1993 Hodder & Stoughton was acquired by Headline to form Hodder Headline Publishing Group, which was bought by Hachette Livre in 2004 to form Hachette Livre UK
