A common (and often derogatory) reference to Print On Demand publishers, who charge a fee to the author rather than recouping their investment in book sales.
Usually these companies are perceived as preying on authors who cannot get their works published traditionally. Because they do not promote or distribute the books, often their profits comes from the fee the author pays to be "published" rather than effective sales to interested readers.
