She clerked for a federal magistrate in Colorado and practiced law in St. Louis before turning to writing full-time. She has worked as a freelance writer. Burnham was a double finalist in the [[Golden Heart]] in 2000.  One of those finalist manuscripts was ''[[Going To The Castle]]'', which went on to become her first published novel.
