Max Bhagat is the legendary FBI hostage negotiator who first met Gina Vitagliano in Over the Edge, when she was held hostage on a hijacked plane. He fell hard for Gina talking to her over a headset and was devasted when she was raped and beaten by the hijackers. Gina was rescued, but Max blamed himself for her attack. In subsequent books they have met again, but he keeps rejecting her because he thinks she is too young for him. She finally leaves for Kenya where she plans to work at an AIDS mission hospital. While there she meets Molly Anderson (from Out of Control) and becomes embroiled in an intrigue involving Molly and Grady Morant, also from Out of Control. Max's assistant, Jules Cassidy, brings him the news that Gina is dead and they fly to Germany. When they discover that Gina and Molly have been kipnapped by terrorists/drug lords, Max, Grady and Jules go on the hunt to get them back.
