Though her husband was Dutch and she frequently featured Dutch surgeons as heroes, she maintained that he was not her inspiration (he was not, by the way, in the medical profession). Neels did not start writing or publishing until after her retirement in 1969 when she was in her 60s. She was born September 15, 1910 and passed away June 7, 2001.
