Gillian Ward wanted to 'get away from it all' - to find some peace and quiet, sort herself out - and incidentally, to try to get on with writing a book! So she took a job as headmistress at a tiny village school in the Yorkshire Dales. But she soon found that even in such a quiet, lonely spot she was no nearer finding the peace that she sought. There was a feeling in the village that she was too young for her job; some of the parents and their children were almost openly hostile; and as a result of her growing friendship with Ian Roscoe she discovered that she had made an enemy, in Ian's old friend Kate Lytham.
